About Lake Placid Blue

Lake Placid Blue is a natural stone quarried in the United States. Although marketed as a granite, it is petrographically a megacrystic anorthosite, distinguished by medium-grained bluish-black plagioclase crystals with a subtle chatoyant shimmer. The colour reads as deep blue with charcoal and slate-green undertones, giving interiors a calm, watery depth with minimal veining. Known in the trade as Atlantic Green or Cold Spring Blue, this granite is prized for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, flooring, wall cladding and staircases. A polished finish best enhances its iridescence, while honed, flamed or brushed surfaces suit contemporary schemes. Marmi di Carrara supplies Lake Placid Blue as blocks, 2 and 3 cm slabs and cut-to-size pieces, with photos of the actual slabs before purchase.

A megacrystic anorthosite of medium grain size, exhibiting minor chatoyancy in the bluish-black anhedral plagioclase phenocrysts.

Finishes for Lake Placid Blue

Polished

Mirror-like gloss that brings out colour and veining at full depth. The classic choice for walls, tops and interior floors; slippery when wet.

Honed

Smooth and matt, with a soft satin look. Hides small scratches and etching better than a polish and is safer underfoot.

Leathered

A brushed texture on hard stones: matt, lightly textured and very good at hiding fingerprints and water marks on worktops.

Bush-hammered

A rough, pitted surface made with a toothed hammer. Maximum slip resistance for exterior paving, ramps and steps.

Flamed

A thermal finish that makes the crystals burst and leaves a rough, non-slip surface. The standard for exterior granite.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean with water and a neutral detergent; hard stones tolerate everyday use very well.
  • Sealing is quick and recommended on light colours and on honed, leathered or flamed finishes.
  • Avoid waxes and film-forming products that leave a layer on the surface.
  • Outdoors, an occasional wash with a pressure cleaner at moderate pressure restores the colour.
  • Hot pans, knives and frost are not a problem for most stones of this family; use trivets anyway to protect sealers.
