The marbles of the Apuan Alps

Statuario, Calacatta, Arabescato, Bianco Carrara, Bardiglio: the white and grey marbles quarried in the mountains behind Carrara. Marmi di Carrara has worked them since 1956, from the quarry block to the finished slab.

The Apuan Alps are a short mountain range in north-western Tuscany, between the sea and the Apennines. Marble has been quarried here since Roman times, in three main basins above Carrara (Torano, Fantiscritti and Colonnata) and in the neighbouring valleys of Massa, Versilia and Garfagnana. Each basin, and often each quarry, gives a marble with its own ground colour and vein. This is why slabs are chosen block by block, and why we photograph the material we have in stock.
