About Berner Sandstein

Berner Sandstein is a natural sandstone quarried in Switzerland, prized for its warm beige and cream palette. The stone displays a uniform, fine‑to‑medium grain with subtle linear veining that adds depth without overwhelming the overall softness. Its consistent texture makes it ideal for both interior and exterior applications, including wall cladding, flooring, and landscape features. Recommended finishes are honed for a smooth, matte look or polished for a refined sheen, depending on the design intent. Marmi di Carrara supplies Berner Sandstein in blocks and 2‑3 cm thick slabs, cut‑to‑size on request, and provides high‑resolution photos of actual slabs before purchase.

Typically a fine- to medium-grained sandstone with beige to cream tones.

Finishes for Berner Sandstein

Honed

Smooth and matt, with a soft satin look. Hides small scratches and etching better than a polish and is safer underfoot.

Sandblasted

A fine, even roughness obtained with a jet of sand. Lightens the colour and gives grip: used for exteriors, steps and pool surrounds.

Bush-hammered

A rough, pitted surface made with a toothed hammer. Maximum slip resistance for exterior paving, ramps and steps.

Natural cleft

The stone is split along its natural layers and left as it is: a lively, riven surface with excellent grip.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean with water and a neutral detergent; hard stones tolerate everyday use very well.
  • Sealing is quick and recommended on light colours and on honed, leathered or flamed finishes.
  • Avoid waxes and film-forming products that leave a layer on the surface.
  • Outdoors, an occasional wash with a pressure cleaner at moderate pressure restores the colour.
  • Hot pans, knives and frost are not a problem for most stones of this family; use trivets anyway to protect sealers.
